Note

Masonic activity.
At the very first Regular meeting of the Lodge on Tuesday 4th April 1871,following its formation in March of 1871, it is recorded in the Minutes that a Mr Eli Wilkinson, aged 22 years, a solicitors clerk, was proposed for Initiation as a Serving Brother- Serving Brothers usually held the Office of Tyler, often for long periods.
He was balloted for and accepted as such at the Regular meeting held on Tuesday 2nd May 1871 and Initiated at the Regular meeting held on Tuesday 6th June 1871.
He went through a second ceremony on the 1st August 1871 and finally became a Master Mason at an Emergency meeting held on Tuesday 26th September 1871.
He was Invested as Tyler at the first Installation meeting of Anchor Lodge No 1337 held on Tuesday,19th January 1872. For the first 18 months, Lodge meetings were held in rented rooms at the Golden Lion Hotel, Northallerton.
And so, your great- Uncle Eli served as Tyler of the Lodge for the next 50 years however, sadly, although he was invested as Tyler for 1917,1918,1919,1920 and 1921 he is recorded in the Minutes as never attending a single meeting during that time. It would appear that this was due to ill health as there is a note in the Minutes of 8th January 1918 saying that a letter had been received from Eli “expressing his sincere thanks for kind enquiries and solicitations during his illness and prolonged absence from the Lodge”.
As a new Tyler was finally invested at the Installation meeting held on Tuesday 10th January 1922 that ends the story of you great-uncle’s Masonic career.

Note

East Harlsey School - The log book for the school for the period 1886-1908 still exists in North Yorkshire County Archives and gives some fascinating reading. A School Attendance Officer named Mr Eli Wilkinson regularly visited to check on children's attendance. Attendance was very erratic due to weather conditions, special events or farming schedules such as hay making. Many entries state " low attendance today due to Osmotherley Feast or Northallerton Fair - children attending with their parents". In bad weather many children could not get in due to bad roads. An entry on 20th July 1886 states "No sewing today - Sewing Mistress Mrs Wilson is gathering in the hay " !!! The school was closed for five weeks in May 1887 due to an outbreak of Scarletina".
