East Harlsey School - The log book for the school for the period 1886-1908 still exists in North Yorkshire County Archives and gives some fascinating reading. A School Attendance Officer named Mr Eli Wilkinson regularly visited to check on children's attendance. Attendance was very erratic due to weather conditions, special events or farming schedules such as hay making. Many entries state " low attendance today due to Osmotherley Feast or Northallerton Fair - children attending with their parents". In bad weather many children could not get in due to bad roads. An entry on 20th July 1886 states "No sewing today - Sewing Mistress Mrs Wilson is gathering in the hay " !!! The school was closed for five weeks in May 1887 due to an outbreak of Scarletina". |
