On the 2nd March 1942, HMS Stronghold was fleeing from Tjilatjap ?(a port on the south coast of Java)? to Australia when it was discovered and sank by heavy cruiser Maya and destroyers Arashi and Nowaki belonging to Japanese carrier force operating south of Java.
HMS Stronghold sank at 18:58 at position 12.20'S, 112.00'E.
Approximately 50 survivors were picked up by the small Dutch merchant Bintoehan and were later transferred to Maya.
