The quiet little village on 21 Aug 1918 was Millencourt. What he failed to say was that they were about to assemble that night for some very tough fighting at Albert. Fifty one men were killed between 22nd and 27th. Frederick James Milburn Born May 1891 24 DEC 1914 Fred sends postcard to friend wishing him a “Happy & Joyous Yuletide”. Picture on postcard is of Fred in uniform with his cap beside him. The badge on the cap is of the Green Howards. There are no “stripes” on Fred’s uniform so assume he was a “private”. Early 1916 Fred Marries in Yorkshire http://www.nryonline.co.uk/pictures/becky/bellafred.jpg 4 AUG 1916 Note stating “Admittance to camp hereby granted to friends of Corpl Milburn”. Hipswell Camp, Captain (?) Lee, Commanding ‘A’ Coy, 2/4 Yorks. Date unknown - I've put it in this time frame based on the address. Letter of condolence sent to Mr & Mrs Johnson regarding the death of their son Henry. He writes his address as: 2 M Stores 2/4 Yorks Ry Hepswell Camp Catterick Yorkshire 19 NOV 1917 Fred writes letter sent to his sister Sarah. He writes his address as C’ Coy 4th Res. Yorks Regt. Sutton on Hull Fred writes that he hopes to get a weekend pass soon and that although the “percentage allowed is small” he thinks that “a little diplomacy and tact may facilitate matters”. 9 JUN 1918, France Fred writes a letter to Sarah, he states his address for posting letters to as: No. 2 Platoon A. Coy 7th Buffs, B.E.F 15 AUG 1918 Fred writes to Sarah, he informs her that he is “now a Sgt. again. That is to say I have got made full rank which being on the field will be substantive” 21 AUG 1918 Fred writes to Sarah, he tells her he has rejoined his battalion in “a quiet village somewhere in France.” Fred mentions a “Sgt. of this battalion who was in the same hut as me at the 11th Stationing Hospital”.
