Note
|
Thomas died of Apoplexy aged 68. Thomas joined the 75th (Highland) Regiment of Foot in 1790. He was at one pointa labourer. Army records show that Thomas was wounded in action fought at Jemanlabad. This took place after the Battle of Seringapatam (1799). Thomas is not included in the list of casualties in that action so he lost his leg as a resultof wounds received in the later action. These events took place in the Mysore region of South Central India and were fought against the French and local native leaders for the control of the whole of the Sub-continent. So Thomas lost his leg to ensure the survival of British rule in India for 147 years. Thomas could read and write - he was also known as the Scribe of Newbegin. He used to write letters on behalf of people and then read the replies to them. Tradition has it that he used to sit on the steps of the Blue Ball Innin Newbegin and ply his trade. |
